Last Night, I Saw Paul

Simon on Saturday Night Live. I know, yesterday wasn’t Saturday, but we were catching up. I should also say, that SNL is in the (rather large, I’ll admit it) group of shows/movies that I always, ALWAYS fall asleep during. The only things on TV that I might more frequently sleep during might be Monty Python, anything by Woody Allen and, of course, the McGlauglin Group. Those put me out like a light every time. Of course, those are all trumped by the 2 hour nap that I took during Malcolm X at the theater. The movie might have been good — I wouldn’t know since I think I actually fell asleep during the previews that time.

So, just before I drifted off, I saw Paul Simon sing some new songs. My opinion was that these songs were just okay. But, hearing these unfamiliar songs made me think about all the other Paul Simon songs I’ve loved over the years and I suddenly remembered this song. He sang it in 1974 with Phoebe Snow. I just love her voice.

Sometimes a gospel-sounding song that really moves is just the thing.
